Professional podcast audio begins with a suitable room and one controlled microphone path for each primary participant. Record isolated channels, monitor throughout the conversation and preserve a separate backup where the production requires it.
Place the appropriate microphone close to each speaker, record every person separately and control the room. A premium microphone positioned too far away in a reflective room will usually sound worse than a well-positioned professional microphone in a controlled space.
The room becomes part of every voice
Reflections arrive at the microphone just after the direct voice, making speech sound distant or hollow. HVAC, traffic and adjacent conversations sit underneath every word. Noise-reduction software can help with minor problems, but aggressive processing can also make voices unnatural.
Choose the quietest usable room and add temporary absorption where needed. Reduce empty parallel surfaces, keep microphones close and avoid placing participants directly beneath noisy vents.
Choose microphones with the visual design
Visible broadcast microphones can support an intentional podcast aesthetic and maintain close, consistent placement. Discreet lavalier microphones may suit executive conversations or branded sets where equipment should be less prominent. Boom or other approaches can work when framing, movement and room conditions allow them.
The correct choice balances sound, participant comfort and the image. It also considers how much people turn, lean back or handle papers during the discussion.
Record isolated channels
Each participant should normally be recorded on an individual track. This lets an editor adjust levels, reduce a silent participant’s room pickup and manage interruptions without changing everyone. A mixed program track is still useful for monitoring, livestreaming or fast delivery, but it should not be the only recording when post-production flexibility matters.

Monitor the entire conversation
A sound check proves that the system worked for a moment. During recording, participants move, clothing changes, cables can be touched and remote connections can drift. A remote participant must hear the in-room conversation without hearing a delayed copy of their own voice. The production also needs to record the incoming guest cleanly and decide whether the platform’s local recording will be used as an additional source. Test this routing before participants arrive.
Define the audio deliverables
Confirm whether the editor needs raw isolated WAV files, a mixed master, processed dialogue, synchronized camera files or a finished audio-only episode. Naming, sample rate and channel layout should be agreed before media is transferred.
